Dental Veneers: Do You Need Them?

Written by Dr. Samintharaj Kumar | Jun 1, 2018 7:14:00 AM

There are different types of veneers, which can be made from porcelain or composite resin (that is tooth coloured). They fit over existing teeth, and are bonded to them in a special manner. They can be called covers for the teeth, and are used for changing the colour of teeth, as well as their size and shape.

Temporary veneers tend to be made out of a different material, as compared to the permanent ones. The pricing of veneers depends on the type of veneers, their number, as well as the dental lab and expertise of the dentist.

Do You Need Dental Veneers?

You may be the ideal patient for dental veneers if you have one of the following conditions:

Stained Teeth: The natural colour of teeth is off-white, but they are prone to staining due to smoking or using other tobacco products, or consuming large amounts of coffee, tea or red wine. Some medications can also can also cause discoloured teeth and lead to blotchiness. If teeth whitening is important to you, dental veneers are a suitable option.

Chipped or Damaged teeth: These are very common due to accidents or while playing contact sports, and can happen anytime. That’s why wearing a mouth guard is important, as these can protect your teeth from potential damage.

Gaps: If you have spaces between your teeth, they might be a cause of embarrassment for you. However, this can be fixed with dental veneers, as they can be customised to fill in the gaps between your teeth. Thus, you can gain a beautiful and functional smile!

Misshapen or Crooked Teeth: Not everyone is blessed with a flawless smile, and most people have crooked, misshapen, or uneven teeth. Dental veneers can cover imperfect teeth, and are bonded to the front surface of your smile, to provide an aligned appearance.

The Process of Getting Dental Veneers

You start off by visiting your dentist, during which your X-rays will be taken. You can also let your dentist know what you expect from your veneers.

After this, the dentist will prepare veneers by taking an impression of your teeth to send to a lab. This takes about one to two weeks.

After this comes the placement stage, during which your dentist will check the fit as well as the colour of the veneers, and prepare the teeth by cleaning them. The tooth surface is also roughened to boost the adhesion of the veneer.

The veneer is then attached to the natural tooth with a special cement, and ultraviolet light is used for hardening it. After this is done, your dentist may schedule a follow-up visit after a couple of weeks, to ensure that the veneers have been placed properly.

You can follow the standard oral health routine of brushing your teeth twice daily, and flossing once daily. Good care and good oral hygiene will help your veneers last for five to ten years, before they need to be replaced.
