Emergency Dental Tips from Nuffield Dental Dentists

Is your sleep interrupted with a dental nightmare? Did you get yourself a knocked-out tooth after office hours? Not to worry, Nuffield Dental has you covered with our emergency dental tips.

An emergency dental problem can happen anywhere, anytime and that is why we want to help you, whether it is in our clinics or at home.

There are a few types of dental emergencies that could happen. These include:

  • Traumatic injuries, e.g. Broken/chipped tooth or jaws.
  • Abscessed Tooth
  • Toothache
  • Bleeding from cuts to the gums
  • Wisdom teeth extraction surgery

In cases of emergencies like a knocked out or an abscessed tooth, you can make an emergency appointment or call us to seek immediate dental services. However, you can do these steps to reduce discomfort before looking for emergency dental care.

Knocked Tooth

  • Carefully pick up the damaged tooth by the crown or the top.
  • Avoid touching the root at all.
  • Gently rinse the teeth.
  • If possible, put the tooth back in the socket. If not possible, place the tooth in a small container of milk and get to the dentist quickly.

Chipped or Cracked Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling as much as possible.
  • Avoid taking a painkiller/pain reliever or putting numbing gel as they can damage your gums at this point.

Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth is a pocket of pus that could form in certain parts of a tooth. This is usually caused when bacteria invade the innermost part of the tooth which contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue.

Bacteria can enter from a dental cavity or a chip or crack in the tooth. The bacterial infection can cause swelling and inflammation at the tip of the root.

A dental abscess is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition which should be treated immediately. Having an abscessed tooth can lead to fevers, tooth sensitivity, persistent toothaches, tender lymph nodes in your neck, swelling and a pimple-like bump on your gums surrounding the infected tooth.

If not cured, the infection spreads into your jaw, surrounding tissue, and to other areas of the body.

If you have an abscessed tooth, you should follow the following. Before getting to the emergency room:

  • Rinse your mouth with mild salt water a few times to reduce the pain and draw the pus to the surface.
  • To treat this, the pus will be drained out to allow for a root canal procedure or extraction.

Persistent Toothache

  • Rinse your mouth with salt water to clean out unwanted debris in your mouth.
  • Place an ice pack on your cheeks to reduce swelling and numb the tooth or gums.
  • Avoid putting an aspirin on peak of the painful tooth as it may damage the gums.

Bleeding Gums from Cuts

  • Rinse the cut/gum tissues with cool water to remove unwanted debris to keep the cut clean.
  • If bleeding continues, apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze.
  • You can also suck on an ice cube or something cold to minimise the bleeding and swelling.

Conclusion

While it is difficult to predict when you are attacked with a dental emergency, there are ways to reduce the chances of it. You should adopt the habit of preventative care. Having a regular dental regime will encourage good oral health and less of these issues. It is crucial to brush and floss your teeth minimally twice a day to get rid of bacterial plaque.

Getting persistent toothaches and bleeding gums can be a sign of a severe dental problem like tooth decay or gum disease.

However, if a problem arises, call your dentist and try to get the problem fixed immediately to decrease your chances of additional issues.

It is also vital to schedule dental checkups from time to time for regular dental procedures like scaling and polishing to reduce the chances of unpleasant experiences.

At Nuffield Dental, we want to be here for you as much as we can. Thus, we have an emergency dental clinic with our skilled dental surgeons you can go to when experiencing oral issues.
