Don’t Lose Your Teeth To Gum Disease

Keep your gums healthy so you can continue smile confidently

Gum disease occurs when your gums and bone surrounding your teeth become infected by bacteria in plaque. Plaque is a sticky, colourless film that accumulates on your teeth and gums and requires daily brushing and flossing to remove. Left untreated, gum disease can result in tooth decay and even tooth loss.

People with gum disease, according to studies, are more likely to struggle with depression - so keep up with those deep cleaning visits to your dentist. Deep cleaning involves cleaning the affected areas with an ultrasonic scaler that vibrates and emits water.

What Causes Gum Disease?

  • Poor oral habits and irregular dental care can result in plaque build-up. Left untreated for a prolonged period, inflammation occurs and soft tissue and jawbone can become detached.
  • Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and/or Crohn's disease when poorly managed can increase risk of infections, including periodontitis.
  • Heavy smoking is the most significant risk factor associated with the development of periodontitis.

What Are Gum Disease Treatments Available At Nuffield Dental?

Stage 1: Deep Cleaning

Done under local anaesthetic, ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments (for more detailed cleaning) are used to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line, and smooth out rough areas on the root surfaces.

Stage 2: Gum Contouring

Done under local anaesthesia/intravenous sedation, a minor surgery is performed to use
gum from a different part of the mouth to restore the infected area undergoing gum recession. The gums will fuse together in about 6 weeks, reducing the sensitivity and further complications such as the loss of teeth.

Stage 3: Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation

Done under local anaesthetic, a pinhole will be created in the receding gum tissues. Collagen strips will be inserted into the pinhole to keep the gums steady and help create novel tissue, ultimately securing the gums in place.
