When Do I Need A Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Generally, dentists recommend removing your wisdom tooth. Even if it doesn’t impact or affect surrounding teeth, a wisdom tooth is harder to properly brush and clean.

If you experience these telltale signs, please visit a dentist as soon as you can:

  • Red or swollen or bleeding gums
  • Swelling around the jaw
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Difficulty in opening your mouth

Is there any difference between extraction and surgery?

Yes, depending on the condition of your wisdom tooth, your dentist will advise whether extraction or surgery is required.

An extraction does not require incisions on your gum. It is usually performed on the upper jaw, where the wisdom tooth or teeth are visible but not impacted.

Surgery requires incisions on your gum and maybe removal of some amount of bone for the extraction of the impacted wisdom tooth. It occurs typically in the lower jaw, even if the wisdom tooth is visible and not impacted.

What can I expect from wisdom tooth extraction at Nuffield Dental?

Stage 1: Consultation

  • Our gentle and friendly dentists will discuss all your concerns, taking your health, dental and financial circumstances into account. Necessary assessment and examination such as X-rays or CBCT scans are conducted before offering you an individualised treatment plan.

Stage 2: Wisdom Tooth Extraction or Surgery

  • If you are ready for the procedure, the dentist will perform it. Otherwise, a separate appointment will be arranged. You will select the anaesthetic and/or sedation method - it keeps the procedure painless and comfortable. Once the tooth is removed, the area will be well sterilised, and your gums will be stitched back together.

Stage 3: Post-operative care

  • After the procedure is completed, your dentist will advise on appropriate aftercare to ensure an effective healing process, which may take a few days. Painkillers, antibiotics, and an antiseptic mouthwash are usually prescribed to prevent any post-operative complications.
  • You should maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing, and eat only soft foods; avoid vigorous rinsing, smoking, alcohol and strenuous activities for at least a few days after the procedure to minimise the risk of complications.

What are the sedation options for nervous patients?

what-are-the-sedation-options-for-nervous-patients

Oral Sedation

Sedative medication pill(s) are given approximately 1 hour before the procedure to help you relax. This sedation method is preferred by patients with extreme needle phobia. It is generally cheaper than IV sedation.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Sedation is delivered through your veins via a needle and is most commonly used. This method gives your dentist control in ensuring that you are constantly sedated at the correct level throughout your treatment.

Inhalation Sedation

Nitrous oxide - also commonly known as “laughing gas” - is a colourless gas with a slight sweet smell. You remain conscious although light-headed, and can still hear and respond to your dentist during the procedure.

How is the cost of the wisdom tooth extraction or surgery determined?

Wisdom tooth extraction starts from $150 for non-surgical procedures and starts from $950 for surgical procedures at Nuffield Dental.

If you’re eligible for Medisave claims, you can apply for up to $1,250 for surgical procedures.

That said, the costs vary primarily due to the complexity of each case. This depends on factors such as:

Age
Younger patients have softer jawbones, which makes wisdom tooth extraction easier.

Position of gum tissue
A wisdom tooth is easier to extract if it has fully emerged, compared to if it were underneath your gum tissue.

Submerged level of wisdom tooth
If your wisdom tooth is completely buried within the bone, this will require drilling into your jaw to extract.

Proximity to nerves
Deeply buried wisdom teeth are closer to nerves, which makes extraction difficult.

Root shape of wisdom tooth
A wisdom tooth with an irregular root shape is harder to extract.

Your dentist will examine your condition to advise you accordingly on the actual cost of your needs. Consultation fee starts from $40 before GST.

Wisdom tooth extraction and surgery FAQs

How long does wisdom tooth removal take?

Non-surgical wisdom tooth extractions typically require about 30 minutes to complete per tooth.

Wisdom tooth surgeries, however, will take between 30 mins – 60 mins per tooth but this varies with the complexity of the surgery.

Is wisdom tooth surgery painful?

You shouldn't feel any pain during wisdom tooth removal because the area will be numb. However, if you do feel pain during the procedure, tell your dentist or oral surgeon so he or she can provide anaesthetic.

How many days of MC will I be issued after a wisdom tooth surgery?

It depends on your dentist. Most patients are typically given 5 days of MC after a wisdom tooth surgery. If multiple teeth are removed in a single sitting, additional days may be given.

How long does post-surgery pain last?

Post-surgery pain from a wisdom tooth surgery typically lasts around 24 – 72 hours. Medicine to treat the pain will be prescribed to patients.

What can I expect from a wisdom tooth extraction?

Normal healing after tooth extraction is as follows: Days 1 & 2 are generally most uncomfortable, and there is usually some swelling. On Day 3, you should be comfortable and, although still swollen, can usually begin a substantial diet.

What are some side effects of wisdom tooth removal?

  1. Dry Socket (Alveolar Osteitis)

After wisdom tooth removal, blood clots form over the extraction sites to help your mouth heal. Alveolar osteitis, or dry socket, occurs if this blood clot is dislodged, leaving the nerve under your gum exposed to air or food debris. Signs include throbbing or a sharp pain at the extraction site. Please contact your dentist if that happens.
  2. Lip Numbness
Lip numbness is rare but it's possible. Your wisdom teeth are close to the inferior alveolar nerve in the jaw. If the nerve becomes damaged during the procedure, it can lead to numbness in the lips or jaw. This numbness is usually temporary but can become permanent if nerve damage is severe. Most wisdom tooth extractions do not have this complication, however.

Your dentist or surgeon will discuss with you possible wisdom tooth extraction complications and their recommendations for reducing risk, including taking care of your extraction site to ensure proper healing. Follow these aftercare instructions and contact your dentist if you are concerned about any side effects or complications from your wisdom tooth removal.
