Look at your treatment plan. If it says SKY or WhiteSKY, that's a dental implant going into your jawbone. If it says BioHPP or Visio.lign, nothing is going into bone at all, and what you're reading about is the material your crown, bridge or denture will be built from.

One German company makes both, which is why the two get confused so easily. Working out which one is yours makes the rest of your plan much easier to follow.

Which Bredent Is on Your Plan

Bredent is based near Ulm and is really two businesses under one name. One makes implants and the parts that attach to them. The other makes materials that dental laboratories use to build crowns, bridges and dentures.

So the brand alone won't tell you which is which. The product name will.

If your plan names more than one of these, that's perfectly normal. An implant and the crown built on top of it can both be Bredent. It just means there are two things to talk through rather than one.

Replacing a Missing Tooth: The Options

An implant is one way to replace a missing tooth. A dental bridge uses the teeth either side of the gap for support, and dentures sit on the gum and come out for cleaning. Each suits different situations, and which is right for you depends on how much bone you have, the state of the neighbouring teeth, your general health and what you want day to day.

Implant treatment is minor oral surgery, so it carries the risks any surgery does: infection, swelling and slower healing in some people. An implant can also fail to fuse with the bone, which happens in a small number of cases and is more likely if you smoke or have uncontrolled gum disease. Your dentist will go through all of this with you before you agree to anything.

SKY: The Titanium Implant

SKY is the titanium range. It comes in a spread of widths and lengths, including narrow versions for tight gaps and short ones designed to hold a loose denture steady.

It's used to replace the root of a tooth in either jaw, carrying either fixed work like a crown or a bridge, or removable work that clips on.

One thing may come up when your dentist goes through your scan with you. Implants don't always sit perfectly upright, because the shape and depth of your bone can influence the angle at which they're placed. A connecting piece called an abutment then brings the crown back into line so your tooth looks straight. The range allows some adjustment of the angle, and where more correction is needed, the position gets planned around it before surgery rather than fixed afterwards.

WhiteSKY: The Ceramic Implant

WhiteSKY is the white, metal-free option, and it has been available in Singapore since 2016.

Ceramic implants suit single teeth and short bridges rather than large rebuilds. For a bigger case your dentist will usually suggest titanium, or a combination of the two, and will explain why. It's a question of what each material is suited to rather than one being better than the other.

BioHPP: A Material, Not an Implant

BioHPP isn't an implant. It's a tooth-coloured, high-performance plastic that a dental laboratory shapes into a framework, and it never goes into bone. Your dental crown or dental bridge gets milled from it.

It's used for bridges carrying up to two false teeth between the supports, so for a longer span your dentist will choose a different framework material.

The material has a slight flex to it and isn't metal. The published evidence is still developing. A 2023 review found 12 studies covering 119 full-arch bridges built on this kind of framework, and at one year, 97.3% were still in service with none of the implants beneath them failing. The most common issue was the tooth-coloured surface separating from the framework underneath.

Two things to keep in mind. That figure covers one year, so it doesn't yet tell us how these bridges behave over a decade. And the material doesn't suit every job: a separate review found more supporting evidence for its use as a temporary abutment than as a long-term one.

Because Bredent covers both the implant and the material built on top of it, a Bredent plan often involves two decisions rather than one. Several implant systems and framework materials are available, and the combination selected depends on your scans, your bite and what matters to you.

If you have a missing tooth, or a tooth your dentist has said cannot be saved, an assessment can help determine which options may be suitable. Imaging may be used to assess the gap and support treatment planning, with implants being one of the options considered.

Is BioHPP the same thing as a Bredent implant?

No. The implant is titanium or ceramic and sits in your jawbone. BioHPP is a tooth-coloured material your laboratory builds the crown, bridge or denture framework from. They come from two different Bredent companies, which is why the names are so easy to mix up.

Can I have the ceramic implant for a full rebuild?

How long does a BioHPP bridge last?

The published research follows these bridges for around a year, where 97.3% were still in service. Longer-term figures aren't available yet, so your dentist will talk about it in terms of what's currently known rather than a fixed lifespan.

What should I have written down on the day?

The system name, the width, the length and the lot number. Components are matched to their own system and don't transfer between manufacturers, so having those details in your record can help with any future work. Keep a copy for yourself as well.
