People often have more practical questions: whether they can leave with a tooth that day, whether the implant will fit the gap they have, and what the evidence says about how long implants last. Those answers depend on the implant line and your individual case, so that's where we start.

Replacing a Missing Tooth: The Options

An implant is one way to replace a missing tooth. A dental bridge uses the teeth either side of the gap for support, and dentures sit on the gum and come out for cleaning. Which suits you depends on how much bone you have, the condition of the neighbouring teeth, your general health and how you want to live with it day to day.

Implant treatment is minor oral surgery and carries the usual surgical risks: infection, swelling and slower healing in some people. An implant can also fail to fuse with the bone, which happens in a small number of cases and is more likely if you smoke or have untreated gum disease. Your dentist will go through all of that with you before you agree to anything.

Which Straumann Implant Line Is on Your Plan

Straumann makes several implant lines rather than one product. They differ in shape, in what they're made from, and in the size of gap they're designed to fill, which is why a plan names a specific line.

You don't need to memorise the names. What's useful is knowing that the line chosen for you comes from your scan and your examination, and that your dentist can tell you why that one suits your bone and your gap.

Can You Have a Tooth the Same Day?

This is the question most people arrive with.

The titanium lines allow an implant to carry a temporary tooth straight away, as long as it sits firmly enough when it goes in. Your surgeon can only judge that on the day, with the implant already in place, so it's planned for as a possibility rather than promised in advance.

Where it works, a temporary tooth can be fitted. Where it doesn't, a healing period allows the implant time to stabilise before the tooth is restored. The ceramic line is placed with a healing period first, so if you'd prefer to avoid metal and you also want a shorter treatment timeline, both factors can be considered when your options are discussed.

If Your Gap Is
Narrow

Some Straumann implants are made from titanium blended with zirconium. That blend is stronger than titanium on its own, which allows a narrower implant without it becoming fragile, and that helps when there's little space between two teeth.

The implant surface is roughened rather than smooth, because bone grips a textured surface more readily as it grows onto the implant. That growth is what holds the implant in place for the long term, and it's why there's a healing period at all.

If You Wear a Denture That Moves

Mini implants are 2.4mm across and are designed to help steady a denture in a jaw with no remaining teeth. They aren't used to replace a single tooth.

Treatment may involve at least four in the lower jaw or six in the upper, depending on the available bone, the denture and the individual treatment plan. If a denture has been slipping, imaging can be used to assess whether there is sufficient bone volume and whether other treatment options should be considered.

How Long Straumann Implants Last

Implants are a long-term option, and the research now follows them across a decade.

Those numbers describe modern implants as a class rather than one manufacturer. Your own result depends more on your bone, your gum health, whether you smoke and how carefully the case is planned, and these factors are considered during treatment planning.

Straumann implants have been available in Singapore since 2010, and the range is currently manufactured and supported. This may make it possible to identify compatible replacement components for implants placed previously, subject to component availability.

FAQs

Is Straumann better than other implant brands?

Brands aren't really rankable against each other, and that isn't the useful question anyway. What makes the difference to your result is how well the system is matched to your case, and how the implant is planned and placed.

Will my implant last twenty years?

The strongest published evidence currently reaches ten years, where 96.4% of modern implants were still in place, or 93.2% on the more conservative calculation. Research beyond ten years is still building, so your dentist will talk in terms of what's known and what affects your own odds.

What happens if a part needs replacing in ten years' time?

Components are made to fit their own system, so whoever treats you then needs to know exactly what's in your jaw. Ask for the system name, the diameter, the length and the lot number to go into your record on the day, and keep a copy for yourself.

Can I have my tooth on the same day?

Sometimes. It depends on the line and on how firmly the implant sits when it's placed. The titanium lines allow it where stability is good enough, while the ceramic line is placed with a healing period first. This can be determined after your scans have been reviewed.
