What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on enhancing the appearance of your teeth and gums, and may also support improvements in bite alignment and overall comfort. Whether you’re looking to brighten your smile, repair chipped teeth, or straighten your teeth, there are treatment options available through dental clinics in Singapore. From whitening and veneers to aligners and implants, we’ll explore some commonly requested options below.

Cosmetic Dentistry Benefits

A smile that fits your face

  • Small adjustments in shape, colour or symmetry may improve how your smile blends with your overall appearance.

Confidence in your day-to-day

  • Changes to your smile can have an impact on how you feel during everyday moments, such as speaking at meetings or smiling in photos.

Improvements that last

  • Some options, like implants or veneers, are designed to be long-lasting with proper care. Others, such as bonding or whitening, may remain effective with good dental habits.

Teeth that are easier to care for

  • Straighter or reshaped teeth can make brushing and flossing more effective and may reduce areas where plaque tends to build up.

Minimally invasive options

  • Many procedures are designed to be straightforward with little to no recovery time, depending on the treatment. In some cases, a single visit may offer visible changes.

Treatment plans that suit your routine

  • Whether you're preparing for a special event or prefer to take it step by step, treatments can be planned to fit your needs and schedule.

Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth by anchoring a titanium post into the jawbone, where it integrates with the bone to support a replacement tooth. fuses with the bone to act as a strong, stable foundation. Whether you're replacing a single missing tooth or several teeth, the implant supports an artificial tooth (typically a custom-made crown), designed to restore the look and function of a natural tooth. Implants are placed in the jawbone to support replacement teeth.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth to the neighbouring teeth. Depending on the type of bridge, this support can come from crowns placed on the adjacent teeth or small metal wings (thin clasps bonded to the back of nearby teeth). Bridges can be made from porcelain, gold, alloys, or a combination of these materials, depending on clinical considerations and material choice. It may be considered when implants are not suitable.

Teeth Reshaping (Tooth Contouring/Enamel Contouring)  Gently smooths or shortens uneven teeth to adjust the shape of teeth for cosmetic purposes. Permanent, unless further cosmetic work is desired.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of resin, porcelain or composite bonded to the front of your teeth to change the shape, size, or colour of teeth Typically used on front teeth, they are commonly used to cover stains, chips, gaps, or worn edges, and may enhance appearance with minimal preparation of the natural tooth structure, while preserving your natural tooth structure with minimal preparation.

Teeth Bonding

Composite bonding is a minimally invasive procedure used to address minor tooth issues. A tooth-coloured resin is carefully layered onto the tooth to repair chips, cracks, small gaps, or even minor decay. Once shaped to blend with the surrounding tooth, it's set in place using a curing light (a special blue light that hardens the resin) and then polished for a smooth finish. Bonding may be used to cover exposed tooth roots.

Fillings

Tooth-coloured fillings are used to treat small cavities or areas of decay and are similar in colour to the natural tooth. They’re commonly used on visible teeth and may be preferred over metal fillings for aesthetic reasons.

ceramic fillings

Gum Contouring (Gum Lifts)

Gum contouring (or gum lifts) reshapes or removes excess gum tissue to change the shape of the gumline. It may be used in cases where excess gum tissue affects the appearance of the teeth.

Inlays and Onlays

Also known as indirect fillings, these are custom-made pieces used to repair larger areas of tooth damage. Inlays fit into the grooves of a tooth and are used when the outer edges (cusps) are still intact. If the damage includes one or more cusps, an onlay is used to cover a larger part of the tooth. Both are alternatives to traditional fillings or crowns, depending on the extent of damage.

Teeth Reshaping (Tooth Contouring/Enamel Contouring)

Teeth reshaping, also called tooth contouring or enamel contouring, is a minimally invasive procedure that removes small amounts of tooth enamel, the hard outer layer that protects your teeth. This is done to adjust uneven edges or reshape slightly chipped or irregular teeth. It’s a minimally invasive cosmetic option, and may be used with bonding for aesthetic adjustments. Because enamel does not regenerate, only minor adjustments can be made to avoid compromising tooth structure.

Maintaining Results After Cosmetic Dentistry

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste: Use a soft-bristled brush for at least 2 minutes, morning and night. This supports removal of plaque, which may lead to tartar buildup and gum irritation - including around veneers, crowns, or natural enamel.
  • Floss once a day or use an interdental cleaner: Plaque forms between teeth where brushes can’t reach. Daily flossing helps reduce the risk of decay around veneers, implants, and bridges.
  • Limit staining foods and drinks: Coffee, tea, red wine and dark berries are common culprits. If you do consume them, rinse your mouth with water afterwards and rinse your mouth with water and consider brushing after 30 minutes to help reduce staining.
  • Don’t smoke or vape: Smoking or vaping may stain teeth and veneers, and can contribute to dry mouth, which may increase the risk of decay.
  • Schedule a dental check-up every 6 months: Professional cleaning removes hardened tartar (calculus) that can’t be brushed off at home. Scaling and polishing may improve the appearance of your teeth and support the maintenance of cosmetic restorations and gum health.
  • Wear retainers or night guards if advised: After undergoing orthodontic treatments like Invisalign, retainers help reduce the risk of teeth shifting after treatment. Night guards may help protect veneers or bonding from grinding during sleep.
  • Choose tooth friendly snacks: Crunchy vegetables like carrots and celery may help remove food particles from tooth surfaces. Limit sugary snacks which may contribute to decay around restorations.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day: Aim for 6 - 8 glasses of water daily. Drinking water may help rinse the mouth, reduce acid buildup, and support saliva flow - factors that contribute to overall oral health.

FAQs

Is cosmetic dentistry right for me?

Possibly. Cosmetic dentistry may be considered if you have concerns about the appearance or function of your teeth, and your teeth and gums are healthy.

Is cosmetic dentistry painful?

Most cosmetic dentistry procedures are not considered painful, but some individuals may experience sensitivity or discomfort. Numbing agents or sedation may be used to reduce discomfort during treatment. Recovery experiences can vary, and many patients report minimal discomfort.

Is cosmetic dentistry permanent?

Not always. Some treatments, such as implants or veneers, may last 10 years or longer with good oral care. Others, such as whitening, may require maintenance or touch-ups over time.

What’s the difference between cosmetic and restorative dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on enhancing the appearance of teeth, while restorative dentistry addresses dental conditions such as decay, cracks, or missing teeth. Some treatments, like crowns or implants, may restore function and improve appearance.

Can I combine treatments like whitening and veneers?

Yes, it is possible to combine certain treatments such as whitening and veneers to achieve a more uniform or balanced appearance. Your dentist can advise on an appropriate order and combination of treatments based on your goals, oral health, and timeline.

What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?

Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a lab and bonded to your teeth. They are known for their durability and resistance to staining, and may last 10–15 years with proper care. They are usually more cost-effective but may last 4–8 years and can be more prone to staining.

Cost Of Root Canal Treatment In Singapore

Root Canal Treatment Cost

The price varies according to the unique treatment prescribed to each individual patient. For example, if a root canal treatment is require for more than one root, the cost would go up as well. However, saving the tooth with a Root Canal treatment is relatively cost-efficient in the long run.

A Root Canal Treatment procedure in Singapore's price ranges from S$500 - S$1700. However, the price may or may not include the crowning of the tooth and consultation charges. Average consultation prices of dental services in Singapore ranges from S$75- S$200.

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

Is a Root Canal Treatment procedure painful?

  • The entire procedure will be done under local anaesthesia, so it will not be painful than getting your tooth filled or a wisdom tooth surgery. However, the affected area may cause discomfort and be slightly sore post-surgery but it goes away after a few days.
  • If the pain persists, please consult our doctor immediately. You can reach us at +65 9839 7363.

Can I go about my day to day activities after a Root Canal Treatment?

  • Most patients are able to return to school or work the next day following a Root Canal Treatment. However, it is advised against eating immediately post-surgery as there may be numbness in the affected area.

What are the side effects of a Root Canal Treatment?

  • The side effects of a Root Canal Treatment differs with each individual. Some people may experience pain or a slight soreness post-surgery, and some people may experience little to no pain at all. This also applies to certain patients experiencing a measured amount of sensitivity associated to cold or heat when consuming food or beverages.

What is the aftercare for a Root Canal Treatment?

  • As a Root Canal Treatment is considered a restorative procedure, the after-care is deemed crucial to experience lasting effects. After your procedure, your dentist will send you home with pain-killers to counter the soreness you may feel when the anaesthesia wears off. It is also strongly advised against the consumption of food until the numbness wears off. Brushing and flossing daily is encouraged to keep the area clean and this in turn would prevent infection. Upon completing any follow-up appointments for the Root Canal Treatment, you may be required to return to the dentist for a final crown to fully restore the tooth. A properly treated and restored tooth can last as long as your natural teeth.

Can a Root Canal Treatment be unsuccessful?

  • A Root Canal Treatment has a 90% success rate of fully restoring your tooth. However. failure to fully restore your tooth can occur if there is a loose crown, tooth fracture or decay. Undetected canal branches or an obstruction that causes the cleaning difficulties may also cause a Root Canal Procedure to fail. Should your Root Canal Treatment be unsuccessful, explore options with Nuffield's Endodontist for possible solutions.
