What You Should Know About Removing A Decaying Tooth In Singapore

Extraction

A tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket. This may be required if your tooth is affected by extensive decay or gum disease. As tooth extraction in Singapore may sound intimidating, here at Nuffield, our panel of dentists will ensure you are as comfortable as possible during the entire process.

This procedure is sometimes also done to make way for orthodontic treatments, bridges or dentures.

What is an Extraction?

A typical procedure involves loosening your tooth and then removing it from its tooth socket.

In complex cases, for example, where your tooth is buried under your gum or has been very severely broken down by tooth decay, a minor surgical procedure may be required to remove your tooth altogether.

Do I Need an Extraction?

You may need an extraction procedure in Singapore if:
  • A tooth has had extensive decay, gum disease or tooth structure is lost;
  • You are experiencing toothache and infection if a root canal treatment has not been properly done before;
  • You need space for orthodontic treatment (to move your other teeth into straighter positions), bridges and dentures;
  • You have a tooth that is not able to erupt, causing potential damage to your other teeth;
  • You are looking for an early method of wisdom teeth removal: they are extracted before the roots are even formed.

Types of Extractions

There are two kinds of extraction procedures:
  • Simple Extraction: This is performed on teeth that can be visibly seen in the mouth. The dentist will relax the teeth from the jaw bone and then remove the teeth.
  • Surgical Extraction: This is a complicated procedure where a small incision will be done in the gum tissue. This is usually done for those who have premature teeth or injured teeth which have broken off at the gum line.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Stage 1: Pre-Treatment

  • Assessing the Condition of Your Teeth

You dentist will first assess the condition of the tooth in question, to determine if the teeth is in the early stages of decay and whether it can be saved.

Stage 3: Post-Operative Care

  • It is completely normal to feel minor soreness, experience some pain, bleeding or swelling.
  • It usually takes approximately 1-2 weeks for the area to be healed.

Stage 2: Extraction Procedure

  • A typical procedure involves loosening your tooth and then removing it from its tooth socket.
  • In complex cases, for example, where your tooth is buried under your gum or has been very severely broken down by tooth decay, a minor surgical procedure may be required to remove your tooth altogether.

What Are the Risks Involved?

  • Root displacement into sinus: During the extraction process, fragments may sink into the sinus cavity, which could lead to infection. Although rare, removing the root tip in time could prevent it.

  • Pit formation after removal: The empty pit can lead to infection or dislocation of other teeth which can be filled with implants or bridges.
