Jaw Joint Arthrocentesis
Jaw Joint Arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive, minor surgical procedure that is used to treat disc displacement within your jaw joint.
The joint is washed and soothed with sterile fluid, and any unwanted obstructions (e.g. scar tissue adhesions) within are removed.

Do I need Jaw Joint Arthrocentesis?
Your jaw joint may require Arthrocentesis if:
- The cartilage disc within it has been displaced i.e. moved out of its normal position, and
- This is causing significant symptoms such as pain and reduction in mouth opening, which have not been successfully resolved with other non-surgical treatments (for example, home exercises, medication, splint therapy, and/or disclusion joint therapy)
Overview of Jaw Joint Arthrocentesis
-
Arthrocentesis involves inserting two small syringes into your jaw joint. One of these streams the sterile fluid into the joint while the other drains the used fluid. In most cases, your jaw will also be manipulated to remove any unwanted obstructions/adhesions that may have formed.
The procedure will be performed by an oral and maxillofacial specialist who is well trained and experienced to perform such complex procedures.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Stage 3: Post-Operative Care
You will be able to return home on the day itself. Your specialist will provide you with instructions on how to look after your jaw joint after the procedure.
Stage 2: Arthrocentesis Procedure
- The procedure will last 60 to 90 minutes. You are likely to be placed under prior IV sedation or General Anaesthesia to ensure that you feel maximum comfort during the procedure.
