REPLACING MISSING TEETH

Zygomatic Dental Implants

Zygomatic dental implants are implants anchored in the upper jawbone, close to the dense zygomatic bone. It is an alternative to traditional dental implants

They are suitable for those who have severe bone loss or lack of bone volume in the upper jaw but still want dental implants. The implant-supported cheekbone area is used to replace missing teeth and bridges.

What Are Zygomatic Dental Implants?

While conventional dental implants involve drilling directly into the jawbone for the implants to replace teeth, the implant placement of zygomatic implants is done in the upper jaw (cheekbone) instead. This provides support for upper jaw teeth, bridges and dentures.

Due to the placement of zygomatic implants, these implants are also much longer in size than traditional implants and provide a secure foundation for dental implants.

This treatment avoids the need for bone grafting procedures which usually prolongs the healing period. With zygomatic implants, the healing period is shortened to just 2 to 3 days.

Benefits of Zygomatic Dental Implants

There are multiple benefits of choosing zygomatic dental implants over the increased conventional type of dental implants as well as other teeth replacement options, such as:

An Alternative to Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional dental implants require adequate jawbone mass to be present. If an inadequate amount of bone is present, bone grafting or sinus lift procedures are sometimes carried out.

These procedures can be invasive, and so a zygomatic dental implant is an option in such cases.

Ability to Support More Teeth

Zygomatic dental implants have the ability to support more teeth compared to traditional dental implants, due to them being anchored in the denser upper jawbone.

Regular dental implants support solely 1 to 2 teeth, while zygomatic dental implants are able to support 3 to 4 teeth.

Comfortable & Convenient

Compared to dentures or dental bridges, implants are a long-term solution to replacing a missing tooth, and have the potential to last for decades—or a lifetime. Unlike dentures, they do not require replacements after several years, and so require fewer visits to the dentist.

Implants are more comfortable than dentures as they are more secure. Removable dentures sometimes slip in and out of their position as you speak or eat, making it an uncomfortable solution sometimes.

Do I Need Zygomatic Dental Implants?

You may need zygomatic dental implants if:
  • You have a lack of bone volume in your jaw;
  • Your jawbone has undergone severe resorption, where the bone is slowly broken and is reabsorbed into the body. This causes the bone to decrease in mass.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Stage 1: Consultation

  • Assessing Your Suitability for Dental Implants
Before the procedure, you will need to go for a consultation with the provider surgeon to see if you are suitable for zygomatic dental implants, based on X-rays and CBCT scans.

Stage 3: Post-Operative Care

The recovery period for zygomatic implants usually take 2 to 3 days and you can expect to return to normal within 7 days. Our dentist will provide you with the necessary post-operative care for proper healing.

Stage 2: Zygomatic Dental Implant Procedure

  • Creating a Structural Model of Your Jaw

Once the dentist confirms you for the procedure, we will create a structural model of your jaw to assess the shape of your cheekbone and jaw. This helps to plan and execute the implant surgery for the exact creation of the final dental bridge.

  • Anaesthesia

The relevant areas will be numbed with a local anaesthetic so that you will not feel any pain during the procedure, solely some pressure and mild vibration.

  • Placement of Implants
Zygomatic implants will be placed near the bicuspid teeth, through the maxillary sinus into the upper ridge of the zygomatic bone, also known as the cheekbone. After which, a bridge can be attached.
